Diet for Health Monthly Nutrition Tip           April Foolin'
By Nutrionist Jill Brook
Hello Boot Campers!
April is an appropriate time to remind you to ALWAYS CONSIDER THE SOURCE of any nutrition information before you accept it as true. Food and supplement companies have huge financial incentives to exaggerate or even mislead you about their products and unfortunately the FDA does not have the authority or resources to make sure all claims are true.

Vitamin and herbal supplements are especially known for making dubious claims. Independent testing laboratories have found that many supplements don't contain the amounts of ingredients listed on the label and, even if they do, most are not proven to be safe and effective.

You can generally trust nutrition information that comes from respected institutions, such as well-known universities and medical journals. Be especially suspicious of health information that comes from someone who stands to profit from it-like the manufacturer or seller of the item.  Remember that testimonials are often used to sell products that don't pass scientific muster.

When the truly miraculous health and weight loss supplement is discovered, it won't be a secret for long.  Our doctors, health insurance companies and political leaders will be quick to get us using any cure that helps us see results.  Until then, good old exercise and healthy eating are the only sure bets.

Happy April Fool's Day!
-Jill

Boot Camper of the Month - David Fluhr
By David Fluhr
In July, 2005, I discovered Linda's Extreme Boot Camp in La Canada, and figured I'd give it a try. Having been athletic when I was younger, I thought it would be a good way to get back into exercise. Little did I know that it would change my life completely around.
I was nervous, not knowing anyone when I first showed up. But, I soon began to see that I was certainly not alone in my goals. Getting started was the hardest part, but I soon realized that being up at AM and being with a large group of people was FUN. I started to get results. The trainers pushed us hard but kept us controlled and safe from reckless injury. In my first Boot Camp, I lost 17 lbs, and reached my goal weight and fitness level. I enjoyed it. Since then, I have kept it up for every 6 week session.
During this past year, I saw several people come through Boot Camp with the goal of running a marathon. Having grown up in a family with two older siblings who have run NY and Boston several times, I never really seriously thought I could ever participate in one, much less finish. However, I made a goal for myself, and said that I would try to run a marathon in my 50th year. I used Boot Camp, and a serious training regimen for 4 months to get ready for the race. I surrounded myself with people who supported me, good smart training, and the experience of Boot Camp to keep me going, I ran the LA Marathon this past March, and finished. When the going got tough at mile 22, and my legs seized up in cramps, all I could think about was Michigan Hill, and the uphill LUNGES we do over and over again. And THAT kept me going forward one foot in front of the other, until I got my last wind at mile 25. It was an incredible experience, and one I will never forget.
Being back at Boot Camp now, I am inclined to work towards the SHORTER races! But, it is something that meant a lot to me, and I thank Linda, and all the trainers and friends for helping me.

Weight Training and Aging
By Instructor Alex Usategui, CPT
Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are the big enemies when it comes to aging. Osteoporosis is the loss of bone mass and Sarcopenia is the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle. Fortunately, we can help prevent or minimize these occurrences with weight training.  Our bodies build muscle and bone relative to the amount that we use them. Someone who spends his days lifting heavy objects will grow thicker bones and build the corresponding muscles that he/she uses in their lifts. If your day is spent sitting behind a desk, your body will not see the need to hold onto muscle and will break it down; the same goes for the thickness of your bones.

Muscles and bones grow in similar fashion. Through exercise, your body will make slight tears in the muscle fibers. Then, hormones are picked up by receptor cells and control the process of growth. As long as there are sufficient nutrients to perform the task, regular muscle growth takes place. Ontogenesis, or bone growth, begins when it is pulled by muscles during exercise. This pulling activates osteoblasts that rush to the site and lay down collagen for the formation of new bone mass.

The best way to activate both of these sequences, to help increase bone density and skeletal muscle, is to focus on weight-bearing multi joint exercises and try to avoid isolating muscle groups. It is also important to vary the exercises so that the receptor cells are presenting a new stimulus for the formation of the bone.

For best results make sure you are eating the right amount of nutrients required by your body to sustain proper growth in these areas. In regards to exercising, maintain a steady increase in your intensity to give your body reason to grow stronger.
This Is What We Do
By Instructor David Knox, CPT  David Knox
The lead instructor passes you. "Good morning!" he calls out. "Good morning," you answer, bewildered. "Who are you guys?" "Extreme Boot Camp" comes the reply, "and it's a beautiful day!"

The sun is up now, its first golden rays slanting over the misty field as the squads stand in rows, mats on the ground before them, steam rising from their bodies as they go through a steady series of relentless exercises. The instructor sings out and the group responds, counting reps

"Up down up down out down up!
"One!"
"Up down up down out down up!"
"Two!"

Other instructors pass through the ranks, correcting form, reviewing food journals, offering encouragement. What an inspirational scene! The sound, the energy, the crisp response to the commands - all those people working together, dedicated, pushing hard, giving their best for themselves and their squad and, ultimately, for improving their lives.

This is what we do. This is Extreme Boot Camp - an intense, six week, military based fitness program designed to jump start even the most de-conditioned people* on the road to better health, better self image and an improved quality of life. Begun on a chilly, rainy, pre-dawn morning on February 1, 2002, in La Canada, California, Extreme Boot Camp has been growing ever since. From that first hardy group of thirteen, plus three instructors, EBC now has six camps per day, a dozen working instructors, and a combined attendance of more than 235 motivated souls. We've also recently begun a low impact Beginners' Boot Camp for those who don't feel ready to take the plunge straight into Extreme Boot Camp, and it's really taking off!

Over the past five years, approximately three thousand people have passed through our ranks and many of them keep coming back for more.

The stories are astounding:

"This is the best thing that ever happened to me!"

"I thought I was going to be a widow... my husband was in terrible shape and he was starting to have health problems. Now he's stronger and healthier than he's ever been!"

"It has turned my life around! I recommend it to all my friends and family."

"At first, people at work thought I was crazy" (for enrolling in EBC). They all thought I wouldn't last. Now they see the results and they can't believe it. Every day someone is saying how much better I look. And I can feel it! I have more energy, more enthusiasm, and I feel happier!"

We've heard hundreds of such statements, and they never fail to make us smile. Knowing we've been instrumental in helping someone significantly improve their life brings a very good feeling indeed. Still, how does Extreme Boot Camp work? What inspires so many individuals to show up, day after day, often sore, tired and stressed out from the quality of the program. put themselves through a grueling, hour-long workout that challenges not only the limits of their physical endurance, but their strength of will as well?

Short answer- the expertise and dedication of the instructors and the quality of the program.
